Color and Store Displays

Part of the magic of the human experience is the similarities we share in cognitive response. Given a set of different stimuli, a majority of humans will react or feel uniformly. Color is a common stimulus that most people rarely consider. Varying wavelengths of reflected light stimulate our nerves and create distinct responses that are not only connotative but biological as well. Color can change our moods and cause us to be hungry, drowsy, or even upset. It is has the innate ability to influence our decisions while almost unnoticed.

A great deal of study is conducted to understand our natural responses to color for the obvious benefit of subconscious communication, and there is no arena where this is utilized more than in the sales and retail industries. Smart retailers consider instinctual response to color when designing anything in association with their store, whether that means billboards, associates' dress code, or even the walls and store fixtures. The right color of a slatwall fixture or dressing room interior may make the difference of a customer walking away empty handed or with an arm full of clothes.

Possibly the greatest model for color influence is the "Golden Arches" of MacDonald's. Have you ever wondered why they picked yellow? Not only is yellow a cheerful and friendly color that appeals to youth, it has been proven to actually make people hungry for foods high in carbohydrates. In this example, color is utilized perfectly because it identifies with the customers by targeting younger people while generating a healthy desire for fast burning sustenance. Similarly, retailers wishing to take advantage of color stimulus should consider their customers. What is the typical age group of customers? What type of experience do you want them to have? Should there be a vibe of excitement or quiet relaxation? There are so many things to consider, but until a retailer knows their customer and even their own store, it is difficult to choose colors that will accomplish these things.

Once the store design, products, and customers have been clarified, color association may begin. Each color has a typical psychological association that it produces. Red is exciting, passionate, and warm, while pink creates a desire for candy and sweets. Blue is a relaxing color that brings refreshment and symbolizes intuition and integrity, and green universally signifies a nurturing appeal. Most color association is actually common sense if you take the time to think about it, but some colors responses might surprise you. For example, white can be both cold and sterile or it can bring life to other colors.

Color and texture combinations can range from extremely complex to very simple. If you are new to creating a color palette, keep it simple and remember to use high contrast. The more contrast, the more stimulating an environment or advertisement will be. Choose a few colors that contrast but identify with your customers according to age and style. In a retail setting, a splash of red is always great to create that itch of desire. Do not worry too much about producing the wrong effect. Chances are, if you spent some time thinking about it, it will work well. Many retailers don't even get that far.

Workplace Violence: A Growing Concern

Workplace violence has become one of the biggest concerns for managers, corporate executives and Human Resource Departments in the past several years. In fact, the shear number of incidents of workplace violence is staggering.

A report issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after an extensive study, showed that "homicide is the second leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. The report stated that almost 1,000 workers are murdered, and 1.5 million - about 1-in-4 - employees are assaulted in the workplace each year. According to the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), in 1998 alone, there were 709 workplace homicides which accounted for 12% of the over six thousand fatal work injuries in the United States that year."

A Global Concern

This issue is not limited to the United States, as some might assume. It seems that every country is showing a marked increase in the number, frequency, and severity of workplace violence incidents every year.

Duncan Chappell and Vittorio Di Martino, in their work entitled: "Violence in the Workplace," say that a 1996 European Union Survey showed that during the prior year, four percent of workers (about 6 million) were subjected to physical violence while at work or on duty. They also say that, "workplace violence - be it physical or psychological - has gone global, crossing borders, work settings, and occupational groups.

Who is at Risk?

Statistics show that, although no single occupation is immune from violence, violence in the workplace can definitely be seen to be clustered in certain occupations. Occupations having many, if not all, of the following characteristics also show the highest rate of incidents:

  • Contact with the public
  • Exchange of money
  • Delivery of passengers, goods, or services
  • Having a mobile workplace such as a taxicab or police cruiser
  • Working with unstable or volatile persons in health cards.newspicy.info/airline-miles-credit-card-no-annual-fee">care, social service, or criminal justice settings
  • Working alone or in small numbers
  • Working late at night or during early morning hours
  • Working in high-crime areas
  • Guarding valuable property or possessions
  • Working in community-based settings

Depending on the area, taxi drivers had, by far, the highest incident rates. But, again, this is not to be seen as a national or international thing, but something that is dependent on the region where the assaults occur. The number one occupational group suffering the greatest number of assaults is not police and security officers as is often believed. No, the occupation shown to be most at risk are retail sales people, including but not limited to, convenience store personnel. This group is followed closely by those in the service industries like administrative personnel, teachers, and medical professionals. In fact, a report on incidents in one of the "calmest" countries - Sweden - shows medical professionals to be the highest occupation victimized by assault and other workplace violence. And, contrary to popular belief as reported by the media, the greatest threat comes, not from within a company's ranks but from outside.

The most difficult part of getting to the truth of the matter, as with all statistical data, is the fact that the numbers are probably far lower than what is actually occurring. Just as Human Resource managers and the companies that they represent are concerned about legal action in regards to giving reference information about past employees, most are also fearful of their public image should word spread about assaults against their employees.

Prevention and Countermeasures The growing trend for dealing with the problem of workplace violence is in teaching employees, supervisors, and executive management how to spot trouble signs before they occur. This is an excellent place to start to build a sound program. As with anything involving danger, the more information and awareness that can be developed, the more effective we can be in preventing the danger from ever occurring.

However, no program can be considered complete without including employee training for effectively handling, escaping, and surviving actual physical assaults. The fact is, that no amount of understanding and preventative measures will stop certain assailants from attacking. At that point, all that remains is for effective action that will ensure the physical safety and survival of the intended victims.

Remember: Workplace violence is real. It can happen to any employee, in any company, at any time. And, it can happen to you or someone you care about.

QuickBooks - Balancing the Bank Statement

Let's quickly review why the bank statement should be balanced each month as soon as you receive it:

  • Finding Errors. While banks don't make errors very often, you only have a certain amount of time to alert the bank if you do find any.
  • Verifying Entries. Balancing the bank statement is one way to ensure your entries are being recorded properly in QuickBooks.
  • Takes Less Time. The longer you wait, the more transactions you will have to examine, making the process take longer than necessary.

Before beginning, look over the bank statement and make sure all items that appear on it also appear in QuickBooks. In particular, look at the area of the statement that shows electronic withdrawals, such as ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases. Often, there will be one or more items in that section that are not in QuickBooks. Enter those before beginning the reconciliation process. Then:

1. Open QuickBooks. From the top menu, select Banking, then select Reconcile. The Begin Reconciliation window opens.

2. From the Account drop-down box, select account you wish to reconcile.

3. Enter the Statement Date as shown on the bank statement.

4. Verify that the Beginning Balance in QuickBooks is the same as the beginning balance on the bank statement. If these amounts are not the same, you may have changed or deleted a previously reconciled transaction. See #b below.

5. Enter the Ending Balance as shown on bank statement.

6. Enter any Service Charges. From the Account drop-down box, select a Bank Service Charges account.

7. If the statement shows any interest earned, record it in the Interest Earned box. From the Account drop-down box, select an Other Income account called Interest Earned. If this account does not exist, scroll up to create it.

8. Click Continue. The Reconcile window opens.

9. Place a checkmark next to each entry that appears on the both the bank statement and in the Reconcile window. Notice that there are two columns-one for Checks and Payments and one for Deposits and Other Credits. Under normal circumstances both of these columns will have checkmarks in them when you are finished.

10. While doing this, verify that the amounts recorded in QuickBooks match the banks amounts exactly. If an amount in QuickBooks is incorrect, double click the entry to open and change it.

11. If all entries were made correctly, when you are finished checking off everything, the Difference (located in the bottom right corner) will be zero. If it is zero, click Reconcile Now.

12. IMPORTANT: when given the opportunity, print a Detailed report and staple it to the bank statement. If you are running QuickBooks Pro, the printed Detailed report will be your only record should you ever need to go back and see a previous reconciliation.

If the Difference is not zero, errors were made. Verify the following:

  • Checkmarks may be placed next to items that do not appear on the statement, or some items may not have been checked that should have been.
  • Carefully verify that all amounts in QuickBooks match the bank statement amounts exactly, and that all entries on the statement are also in QuickBooks.
  • Its possible, although unlikely, that the bank made a mistake by recording an item incorrectly. If this is the case and you can verify that the Difference is the amount of the banks error, contact your accountant. There are a couple different ways to handle this and your accountant will be able to advise you according to his/her preference and your situation.
  • Always try to make the Difference amount zero before clicking Reconcile Now.

Situations Requiring Outside Help:

a. Pro versions of QuickBooks allow access only the last months reconciliation. Premier versions allow access to all previous reconciliations. If you need a previous reconciliation report and are running QuickBooks Pro, ask your accountant if he/she is running Premier. If so, have your accountant upload your file to his/her computer, then generate the necessary reports.

b. Never delete or change a transaction after it has been reconciled. If you do, it alters the subsequent reconciliation, making it much more difficult. If the beginning balance in QuickBooks was not the same as on the statement, or if the Difference is not zero because a previously reconciled transaction was deleted, contact your bookkeeper or accountant to help resolve the issue.

c. If the difference amount was not zero when you reconciled, QuickBooks made an adjusting entry in both the checking account register and the account called Open Balance Equity (OBE). OBE should always have a zero balance. Contact your bookkeeper or accountant if you ever see a balance in this account.
